CLOS ROUGEARD
There was a time when Loire estates didn't get the recognition they deserved, but today Domaine Clos Rougeard is proving just the opposite. An exceptional figure in the Saumur and Saumur Champigny appellation, Clos Rougeard has been growing for 8 generations. Today, the Foucault family's image is firmly established in the world of French wines. But where did the legend really begin? It was in 1990, at a major Bordeaux tasting in Paris, that the Clos Rougeard Le Bourg 1990 cuvée was slipped in to be tasted among the Pomerols, Pétrus... It just so happened that the Clos Rougeard cuvée came out on top!
But the Domaine's DNA has been handed down through the Foucault family, who have been at the heart of the estate's development. A pioneer of organic farming since the 1970s, Bernard Foucault, the man with the moustache and the velvet jacket, has always given us the recipe for his wines: "the recipe is the vine". With wines aged in barrels for 24 months, and bottles kept in the cellar for a few years before being made available, Le Clos Rougeard's pretty series of vintages have become a veritable phenomenon. Red wines expressing the Cabernet Franc of the Loire, and whites delivering the sweetness of Chenin from one of the best parcels in the Saumur appellation, called Brézé. A quality not kept secret by its owners, Antoine Foucault is master of the vinification of the 2016 vintages, which he elaborates with passion, rigor and know-how, that's the secret. The property was sold after the death of Bernard's brother Jean-Louis. Businessman Martin Bouygues took over the estate in 2017.
Location of the estate
The estate is located in Chacé, Maine-et-Loire, more specifically between Tours and Angers. The estate is 5 kilometers south of Saumur, and its vineyards comprise some ten hectares of vines on plots ranging in age from 40 to 60 years.
Estate wines
Clos Rougeard is planted on plots with very high yields. Le Bourg is the most prestigious parcel, composed of limestone. The 2014 vintage of Cuvée Saumur Champigny le Bourg is very dense. The Les Poyeux parcel is very surprising. With its sandy soil, this 2.9-hectare plot of Cabernet Franc is harvested to produce Saumur Champigny Les Poyeux, which is slightly spicy and floral, with a velvety mouthfeel and elegant finish. A fine wine for laying down, with great potential. Cuvée Saumur Blanc Brézé is a more confidential bottle. Produced from a parcel of just 1.5 hectares, its reputation is well established. The elegance and finesse of this wine are beyond our ability to express .
