ENGEL RENE

René Engel founded one of Burgundy's most prestigious estates. A professor of oenology for 35 years, he is one of the great figures of French wine. He co-founded the famous Confrérie des Chevaliers du Tastevin. His grandson Philippe continued to develop the estate until his untimely death in 2005.

François Pinault bought Domaine René Engel in 2006. He renamed it Domaine Eugénie, after one of the vineyard plots: Le Clos Eugénie. Under this new label, Domaine René Engel now pursues the line outlined by its founding father: quality and tradition in wine.

The geographical location of Domaine René Engel

The Engel family has worked a small estate from father to son. It covers 6.5 hectares of vines. Domaine René Engel is located in the wine-growing commune of Vosne-Romanée. The vineyards stretch along the Côte de Nuits between Gevrey-Chambertin and Nuits-Saint-Georges.

The estate produces red wine from Pinot Noir grapes. The vines benefit from clay-limestone soils and privileged exposure. Philippe Engel had a feel for grape varieties. The quality of his selection and vinification work has given rise to some great Pinot Noir names.

Domaine René Engel wines

The last vintage produced by Domaine René Engel dates back to 2004. But the Engel family's wines have a long ageing potential. They are always sought-after by Burgundy connoisseurs. The domaine has 3 Grand Cru appellation wines: Clos Vougeot, Échezeaux and Grands Échezeaux. Vosne-Romanée Les Brûlées Premier Cru completes this prestigious catalog.

Since 2006, Domaine Eugénie has been gradually converting its vineyards to biodynamic viticulture. The vines no longer receive pesticides. The grapes are harvested by hand. The quality of these historic wines remains the objective of the new owners.
