CHÂTEAU SMITH HAUT LAFITTE

The history of Château Smith Haut Lafitte began in the 14th century in the Bordeaux wine region. More precisely, on the hills (lafitte in old French) of Martillac, south-east of Pessac and Léognan. In the 17th century, the property passed into the hands of George Smith. In 1842, the property was bequeathed to Martin Duffour Dubergier, Mayor of Bordeaux. A century later, Château Smith Haut Lafitte (Pessac Léognan) was officially classified as a Graves Grand Cru. Since 1990, Daniel and Florence Cathiard have been at the helm of this prestigious estate on the outskirts of Bordeaux.

Location of Château Smith Haut Lafitte

Château Smith Haut Lafitte is located in Martillac, Gironde, in the Bordeaux vineyards. The vineyards cover 80 hectares. The property is spread out in a single block over a terroir of Graves Günziennes. It produces AOC Pessac-Léognan and AOC Bordeaux red, white and rosé wines. For red wines, Smith Haut Lafitte is planted with 63% Cabernet Sauvignon, 30% Merlot, 6% Cabernet Franc and 1% Petit Verdot. White wines: 90% Sauvignon Blanc, 5% Sauvignon Gris and 5% Semillon.

The wines of Château Smith Haut Lafitte

In the cellars of Château Smith Haut Lafitte, red wines are aged for 18 to 20 months in oak barrels. The white wines are aged for 12 months. The Graves Grand Cru Classé, Château Smith Haut Lafitte is available in red and white. The two second wines, Les Hauts de Smith and Le Petit Haut Lafitte , are also available in red and white. Château Smith Haut Lafitte wines are now certified organic.
