CHÂTEAU D'YQUEM

Château d'Yquem represents 13 successive generations of winegrowers working to produce a Sauternes that has become one of the most legendary wines of Bordeaux. Since the 16th century, the rigorous methods of grape selection and the climatic conditions of this Bordeaux terroir have contributed to the unique character of this sweet wine. In 1855, Château Yquem's Sauternes became the only 1er Cru Supérieur among Bordeaux wines under Napoléon III. After the Sauvage family and then the Lur-Saluces family, it is now the LVMH group that perpetuates the reputation of Château d'Yquem wines.

Geographical location of Château d'Yquem

Château d'Yquem's vines have been planted on the same terroir for 400 years. The vineyard is located 45 km south of Bordeaux, between the villages of Fargues and Sauternes. The château owns 113 hectares of vines, 50 hectares of pine and acacia forests and 35 hectares of grazed meadows and gardens. The vineyards thrive on clay-limestone soils and the unique Sauternes microclimate. 100 km of pipes drain rainwater from the estate. It is this sustainable ecosystem that maintains the natural balance essential to grape development.

Château d'Yquem wines

Grape maturity has always been the guiding principle in the production of this prestigious sweet wine. The grapes are 75% Semillon and 25% Sauvignon. If the quality is not satisfactory, the vintage concerned is not marketed. Château d'Yquem pursues absolute quality. Yields are low (9 hectoliters per hectare). This choice contributes to the reputation of Château d'Yquem's Sauternes wines. Vintage prices reflect strong demand and limited supply. Since 1959, Cuvée Y in the Bordeaux white appellation has accompanied the prestigious château's offer.
