PÉTRUS

Petrus belongs to the greatest wines of Bordeaux. A legend. That of a single wine and a Pomerol appellation reputed to be among the best in the world. The renown of Petrus was born of the determination of Marie-Louise Loubat and then Jean-Pierre Moueix. The former, a hotelier in Pomerol, acquired the seven-hectare château in 1945 and worked to establish the quality of Petrus. The latter, a wine merchant in Libourne, joined forces with Madame Loubat to distribute it. Appreciated by the British royal family and then by the Kennedys, Petrus quickly gained international recognition. Since 2001, Jean-François Moueix, son of Jean-Pierre, has been at the helm of Petrus.

Geographical location of Petrus

The Petrus vineyards are located on the La Boutonnière terroir in Pomerol, between Libourne and Saint-Émilion. The vineyard covers 4.4 hectares. Seven additional hectares of vines were acquired in 1970. The Pomerol appellation produces exclusively red wine from Merlot, Cabernet franc, Cabernet Sauvignon and Malbec grapes. Since 2010, 100% of Petrus wine comes from Merlot .

The Petrus vines thrive on uniquely rich geological soil. The soil is composed of black and blue clays. These are exceptional water conditions for a vineyard. The vines are cultivated using sustainable methods. The grapes are harvested by hand.

Petrus wines

Petrus produces justone wine. A red Bordeaux from the Pomerol appellation: Petrus. Production is limited to 30,000 bottles a year. The wine is aged in oak barrels for around 20 months before bottling. The demand for perfection is present at every stage of the Petrus vinification process. The 1956, 1965 and 1991 vintages do not exist because of insufficient quality. The wine enjoys a rare reputation among the great wines of Bordeaux. It competes with Saint-Émilion and Margaux. Petrus has thus fulfilled the wishes of its patrons, Marie-Louise Loubat and Jean-Pierre Moueix.
